Dandenong City took out the 2016 Victorian Croatian Cup in stifling conditions against Melbourne Knights at the home of the St. Albans Saints.
Aaron Healey’s men took it to their more fancied opponents, and two quick second half goals to skipper John Carroll and dynamic wide man Chris Antoniadis was enough for the youthful City side to take out the title and give themselves confidence for round one of the NPL.
The two day tournament also featured a youthful North Geelong Warriors side, who took their place in the tournament whilst Micky Čolina’s senior team were in Adelaide playing and beating Adelaide Raiders, and the hosts, St. Albans Saints, who were under the guidance of new coach Željko Kuzman.
All of the teams got a win and loss in the first day of matches, with Dandy City and the Knights getting the vital wins on Sunday morning to advance to the final.
There were also women’s matches, with Melbourne Knights senior women’s team taking out the AHD Katarina Zrinski trophy, defeating St. Albans Saints and the Knights reserves team in a round robin format tournament.
As with all functions at the Saints, there was traditional mixed grill for those hungry guests, whilst the bar was busy throughout the two days as Melbourne finally put on some consistent summer weather. The Saints can be grateful to their tireless group of volunteers and committee members that made the two days run so smoothly.
More of the same can be expected for the club’s season launch, which will take place at the club on Thursday 18th of February. A $25 all you can eat buffet will also feature the unveiling of the new 2016 kit. Contact the club for more details.
